Message It's a nice change of pace considering .... atleast it's not a which exhaust, wing, front end discussion

now, like it or not I chose to make a new thread on the subject for a more objective look at the staggered vs. non-staggered discussion because his thread was highjacked into that discussion which is not what he asked about.

Now, it can be looked at from different points of view and, like it or not, I do have a good deal of experience in this arena. considering, well my job, for one. That plus with 30+ years of track driving from go-carts to an overweight Nissan I drive now.

In theory what was said in the other thread by several people regarding same sized tire ... that's right to a small extent. although the fact of the matter is our cars are limited by front end clearance issues so, in order to put the most power down a stagger makes a very compelling arguement.

So, that nobody misunderstands I run a 265 front tire and a 285 (soon to be 275/295) rear tire and my car while not the most powerful is DEAD NEUTRAL in the middle of a steady state corner.

now let's compare to setups ( for the sake of the discussion let'sand assume suspension, power mods and driver skill are equal)

my soon to be set up 275/295 vs. 275x4

the 275's on the front of each car has the opportunity to create the same amount of cornering grip (correct?)

300zxquire's car has more than enough adjustable suspension components compensate for the understeer so, in reality he could run my set up if he chose to but, it is admittedly not very street friendly.

now, unless somebody can offer a reasonable reason why 1 275 can not create as much grip as the other 275 ....

In the rear wouldn't it stand to reason that the 295 rear can put the power down off the corner better than a 275?

now onto 300zxquire

will 300zxquire's stagger create understeer? ..... yes

can you tune the suspension to eliminate most if not all of that understeer? .... yes

could he get better results with 275x4? ...... yes

are those better results because all four tires are the same width? ...... no, it's because a 275 can create more grip than a 245

would a car with the same mods and 275's on all four corners be able to run faster laps than his setup? .... yes

would the 275x4 be more prone to snap oversteer? ... yes

what about throttle induced oversteer? .... yes

would the 275x4 setup be more twitchy at the limit? ... yes

could he or anybody else turn faster laps with the non-staggered setup vs. the staggered setup (be careful with your answer here)? ........ not neccessarily ....

the reason you ask? ..... the only time the faster lap times would be turned is when the car was driven at or close to the limit and a vast majority of people can not drive a car @ 8/10's of the cars true ability let alone 10/10's

how many of you, who were attacking his choice in a race package have ever driven for any length of time on a track @ 10/10's of the cars ability sucessfully? and if you did how fast were you going when you wrecked or went off track (that is unless Mario Andretti is reading this)

High speed track driving a car will benefit from slight understeer or tightness if you prefer to allow for more aggressive use of the throttle coming off of a corner ...

while, his choice may be a little more conservative than what the others have posted but, he obviously is not under the delusion that he is the greatest driver of all time out to set a land speed record and has chosen to go a safer less aggressive route to enjoy his track time while allowing him to power out of the corners a little sooner.
